The Giant’s Causeway

The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland

(*text în română mai jos)

During my Geology studies at Babes Bolyai University in Cluj Napoca, I had the opportunity to learn about various geological processes, including volcanology. Later, while traveling, I occasionally had the chance to encounter in the field and see firsthand some of the geological features I had previously studied.

Giant’s Causeway is the most visited attraction in Northern Ireland.

On the northeastern coast of Northern Ireland, steep cliffs rising dozens of metres above the sea suddenly cut across the vivid green hills, making you feel very small.

The most famous landmark in this area is Giant’s Causeway, located in County Antrim, 5 kilometres from the town of Bushmills.

More than 40,000 basalt columns rise from the sea, creating an almost surreal landscape. Around 60 million years ago, a volcanic eruption occurred here, producing a massive flow of fluid basaltic lava.

This lava flow initially formed an enormous volcanic plateau, the far end of which can be found across the sea, on the Scottish island of Staffa.

As the lava cooled, cracks developed across its surface, radiating in three directions from what are known as centres of contraction. These processes produced vertical fractures, forming the basalt columns that we see today.

The columns are predominantly hexagonal, but they can also have four, five, seven or eight sides, depending on the way the cracks intersect.

Horizontal fractures also occurred, breaking the columns into step-like sections, a process further enhanced by marine erosion. The tallest columns reach 12 metres, while the thickness of the solidified rock is 28 metres.

According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by giants, mythical figures from Gaelic mythology. This is where the name Giant’s Causeway comes from.

The site was first described in 1693 by Sir Richard Bulkeley at the Royal Society of Britain, having been discovered by the Bishop of Derry the previous year. It gained international attention after it was depicted in a series of watercolours by Dublin artist Susanna Drury in 1739.

Since 1986, Giant’s Causeway has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2012, a new visitor and information centre dedicated to the site was opened, featuring architecture inspired by the famous basalt columns.

Hundreds of tourists visit this remarkable place every day, where its grandeur is revealed anew with every low tide.
