Southern Spain is sunny and generally has arid landscapes. We only imagine it with sun and exotic places.
This spring when I traveled there, it wasn’t like that at all.
Torrential rains were daily. It was strong wind and cold. There were even floods on the major rivers, and mountain roads were affected by landslides. I had the opportunity to see Andalusia in a special way, with obvious effects of current climate change.
My participation in the Festival Acuarela Cordoba was a good opportunity to discover beautiful places in Andalusia, South of Spain. We did a tour from Malaga east on the Costa del Sol to Nerja, then north through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, to Granada, Cordoba, Montilla, then to Sevilla, we continued west to Cadiz on the Atlantic coast and from there east again, to Ronda, Marbella and back to Malaga.
Inspired by this trip, I painted a series of watercolors. The atmosphere in these watercolors reflects the gloomy days, with torrential rains that I had.
Technique: watercolor – Lunar Black Daniel Smith pigment on Lanaquarelle paper, 300g and Baohong paper, 300g, size 38×56 cm, 2025. (work in progress)
